What's up, what's up, what's up? Good morning, good evening, good night, good afternoon, whatever time you're listening in, wherever you're listening from.
Could have been anywhere in the world, but you're here. Take a moment, be present, recognize that it's now, right now.
Whether you're right now is running, driving, flying, laying down, recording a podcast. Be thankful we're alive, baby.
Remember, failure can be frightening.
However, as Winston Churchill reminds us, success is all about going from failure to
failure without losing enthusiasm.
This is I Will Not Lose podcast, where we set out to prove everything is learned from
failure.
We must persevere and recognize it as one step closer to success.
I'm your host, Tony Ortiz.
Let's jump right in.
Got my buddy Johnny in the building today.
Cool thing you got here.
he's playing with the with the gimbal putting together some content that we use to promote
the episode but we are here live in the brand new set uh we're here man we built it this all
came from the vision remember about a year ago we were sitting there are you leaving that on
oh man i'm gonna have a 30 minute video i don't think i got enough space
now that'll be cool post that as a reel or something but i'd like to introduce johnny
melendez what's up i've known this guy since a long time yeah four or five years old yeah
sounds about right kindergarten days yeah i got you on the mic there now yeah oh man we go way
back so you're partially uh a bit of a sponsor when i first said i had this crazy idea hey we're
gonna start a podcast we um you had the sm58s yeah i had one of these and then uh the 58 i was
like yo i got you i'm coming through give me like an hour and i came through yeah about an hour and
a half later we had the uh the coat hanger i'm gonna probably grab it during this because we're
on video too i'm gonna grab it but you remember the screen that held the it made it was made to
hold monitors yeah and we like duct tape and garbage tie it was uh it was definitely quite
the put together rig but uh it's come through nice you got this cool banner it's like it's
really coming through this whole thing do you remember the the logo in the beginning i i
remember i put together a logo and i had it all designed with like the podcast mic and fire and
wings and did you see it did i show it to you before it was lost to all time i see i saw a
couple different designs because you were going through a couple designs with me so i did see
that one and i saw a couple similar to ones different color schemes and all that so on uh
episode zero i go into how i had created the logo for it and then ultimately restarted my computer
for audio drivers and never saved the logo so that's lost to time you know sometimes that's
the best thing when you lose something because you create something that's even better just like
forcefully like not not even this wasn't even the plan but this is how i ended up
and ends up well sometimes look what we got we got the crown with the i will not lose and the stars
a lot of meaning behind that one so i like it i like it i'm cool with it fast forward we got
actual mic arms we got actual mics got uh got the setup got some lighting yeah man that's well
lit now yep slowly make the upgrades um thank you to everybody who donated through the donation link
helped uh put everything together but this is unveiling the studio i'm glad i had you you
helped me put everything together hang the curtains and stuff like that so really the
first sponsor i think i shouted you out as the first sponsor with the i heard it with uh with
the mic appreciate it yep so we'll see where we could take this thing man we're growing it's crazy
you just turn on the mic post it to the internet and people listen internationally shout out to my
listeners in belgium yeah that's crazy having international listeners i mean you never know
the sky's the limit well yeah i'm in the ceiling right now but beyond that we got the sky it's out
there somewhere yeah yeah man yeah man shoot for the moon shoot for the stars um so what do you got
going on is there anything you could talk about just yet or save that for a future episode well
i was working on uh i am still currently as you know working on an album so uh it's going to be
called midlife crisis and i thought the name was suitable because it's i was just like really
thinking about i'm like feel like i'm at a turning point in life i'm 35 i'm just like doing the same
old loop work which ain't bad i mean you work you come home and that's that's usually everybody's
right but i kind of felt like incomplete because back in back when i was in my 20s i played in some
bands uh rock bands punk rock band and uh i always loved music music was something of a passion of
mine still is and i felt like i could not just die without putting some kind of music out i felt like
all that music i did would have just died in vain everything so i felt like i had to do something
like and i told myself i'd be okay if that album when it comes out if it lives and dies on my phone
or even in this great city of Allentown, if it lives and dies here,
I'm perfectly fine with that because it's more about expressing a lot of things
that happened throughout my life until this point.
I feel that, man.
I feel that.
But that's all I can talk about that.
It's still coming together.
Future date, though.
I'll be sure you're the first one to know.
All right, cool, man.
There's always a seat ready here for you.
Appreciate it.
it had me thinking I wanted to go over, I was sitting there going through, like,
did I really take time to list out my accomplishments and be grateful for them?
You know what I mean? Or do I just keep going? And it's like, you fast forward a year and you're
looking around, it's like, oh man, I haven't actually recorded. So we had some pre-recorded
content go up for the past month or so, which gave us time to build the set, focus on where
the show is going to go from there. And I never took the time to actually sit down and be like,
man, look, things are working out with life. Got the podcast going, the design business,
we're completely booked out for the next month. So that's going good. Things going good with the
family. We have my son in the studio. He's picking up. You were mixing his song. What do you think
of that i thought it was something that is uh definitely contemporary definitely like modern
and definitely could be something yeah if take the time to write some lyrics uh for your son
write some lyrics and uh just get them on track because uh that's definitely a sound that people
go for in these days yeah it's definitely workable and i just i think about it a lot
there's so much talent so much skill here in allentown and it just i don't want to say it
goes to waste because it doesn't go to waste but it's just we don't have a big local music scene
here i mean there is some small spots that do something but it's not as big as it should be
like if you go down to philly they got a they got a pretty big scene you go out you see a bunch of
local bands and it's a good show it's a packed show it's hard to pack out a show with the local
name around here everybody's just chasing big names that come into town passing by and whatnot
but i think this city definitely has a lot of potential and it needs to be shown on like a
light needs to shine on all of us here that are trying to do something so many people with big
dreams here definitely man uh they're welcome to come on i will not lose podcasts yes this is
going to be your breakthrough get up on here if you're a local artist and you just want to get
your music out come on i will not lose podcast and i guarantee you will not lose after that
there you go man that's that's the clip i'm gonna clip that i actually got a phase one working on
the intro for season four so i'm gonna switch up the audio switch up the audio we we got the
visual experience where we want it to be now it's a matter of just shifting to creating that audio
experience and pulling everything all together but even like when he came on here he played some
music and then people were texting me like oh man and they're texting me the the uh album artwork
yeah and i'm like oh man so it works trust me people people discover stuff in all sorts of
new ways yeah um who's the guy you had i think it was your first guest what was his name the rapper
gil thompson there you go yeah gil thompson after seeing that episode i went and got the album and
i was just thinking about it on the way over here that that that one he had just one track
accountability and it really hit me like today and what i was thinking about everything in life
i was like i was thinking about that song and i put it on and i was like oh yeah so i was just
like really feeling that and i wouldn't have i probably wouldn't have known the gil thompson's
it wasn't for this show well so you heard it here i will not lose podcast yeah he broke uh he broke
his album writing the heel on this show and a couple of people reached out shout out to gil
thompson been doing uh he's been doing music for a while i've probably done between singles and
album covers like 14 15 different pieces of artwork for him okay yeah definitely uh probably
like five or six of them being albums but go check out writing the heel on gilthompson.com
um but i've had a i've had some diverse guests and depending on i think this one's gonna drop
before we have heidi marco on we just had v alvarado excuse me a second i'm gonna have rocker
on john rocker okay but so besides music what else uh you got going on i've been training jujitsu
that's been fun yeah like uh tell me more about your jujitsu ah i don't know big shout out to
evan robinson over at exalt jujitsu but get over there a couple of days a week big shout out to
deb kirby um that's a serious commitment like a couple days a week to be just like fighting
i mean like if you're not a trained fighter ufc if you're like a ufc fighter you're doing that
that's what you do for a living but to do all your work and then to go train after that that's uh
there's a lot of effort yeah no for real for real it's fun though we do uh you do like flow
rolling or rolling with your eyes closed or competing for a few minutes at the end but
we'll go through work a skill this week we're working on arm bars so that sounds like fun
learning how to break arms yeah that's definitely a life-saving skill i'd like to see more um
women girls be into that as far as like self-defense how many how many women are in
your your gym your judo what are they called uh dojo i guess i just called yeah because i knew
that was like karate you went to the dojo but it's the same thing for bjj uh yeah some school i mean
your school but um maybe you got i don't know i call uh i call him coach i say i'm going to
practice i don't know but it's weird i look at it a lot like uh like you remember dragon ball z how
Goku would like train he'd get better but he looked at it like mostly as a joke like he was
just like fighting for fun no well you never saw Dragon Ball Z I know what Dragon Ball Z I never
got into Dragon Ball Z and I know like a lot of the friends I have a lot of the people we both know
they both love they all love Dragon Ball Z but I'm just like yeah I was never into anime or
anything big shout out to my partner Joe Graziano he trains jujitsu he never watched uh Dragon Ball
z either and i'm like dude it's like it's you don't get my references why would you trade
martial arts if you're not into anime that's the whole point of watching anime is like oh you know
but aren't you learning some japanese or would you chinese chinese yeah mandarin chinese that's
i've been learning for about like six months so far so it's uh it's tough it's tough i was like
i was thinking about i was like why why don't you want to learn chinese in the first place but
i'm sure when i reach that destination when i'm like two years into it and i could speak a well
amount of chinese i'm like oh i'm glad i learned this but for now it's just like uh why am i doing
this yeah isn't that any any journey and so you always question why you're doing something
because uh and that's good for long-term success when it comes to long-term success we can't be
looking for immediate rewards because we all want the quick reward to feel good in the moment but
enduring that whole length of struggle to gain a goal no matter what that goal is whether it's
learning a language uh learning a new skill instrument whatever whatever that might be
starting a business martial arts yeah it doesn't it's a long journey to you get to
a good how long did it take you to learn graphic designs to be as great as you are now at it
Ooh, I've easily put over 15,000 hours in.
Was it worth it?
I mean, it works well.
Was it worth it?
You don't think about it along the way.
It's worth it, but it would have been worth it if I did 1,000 hours and stopped.
Do you know what I mean?
Even these little side projects that you pick up or do, like making music, doing things
on the side that it's like, okay, I'm not going to put eight hours a day for the next
10 years into this, but it's still something I'm learning.
like if i if i look back if i've reached black belt it's like was it worth it sure but if i
get to blue belt and say okay i know more than you know 90 of the world in terms of what to do
on the ground or what to do in a altercation then yeah maybe that's enough you know what i mean like
you don't have to go super saiyan no no just not to diffuse the situation they shouldn't go to
extreme levels of violence with any physical confrontation and it's hard i mean uh i mean
because there's a lot of nonsense violence that go that gets just carried away and i think if more
people were trained in brazilian jiu-jitsu they'd be more likely to want to diffuse the situation
instead of taking it to an extreme level of violence i don't know what do you think i mean
there's definitely a level of control and the last thing you want to do like when anybody who
trains will tell you like the first line of defense is like your legs like if you can still
get out of there like the only time you should be engaging is literally if you're trying to walk
away and somebody's like walking up on you then like cover your face and go in for the hips but
it's like that's fair you there would be a lot less people wanting like if more people trained
less confrontation would happen yeah because you know what could happen he's like i know what this
guy's capable of too but at the same time the the training doesn't like if you're against three
people you know you don't really want to get on the ground and engage with one because then you
have feet coming from other you know what i mean so yeah you just want to get out of there there's
weapons and stuff involved and things escalate like it's you know it's it's cool for self-defense
and for confidence like one thing that people tell you that train it's like you go around like
looking not sizing people up but you're like you're running through moves like i think i think
no matter how big or small you are i think that's something we all do as men and i've heard it on
another i think it was joe rogan's podcast or something like that some dudes on there he's
like yeah i do all those things i make sure i'm fit because you know what at the end of the day
i just want to make sure i can kick somebody's ass if i need to and that's what he said so like
ultimately that's that's it like we we all have that as men anybody that tells you otherwise it's
no you know you're lying to yourself because i think that's it yeah i think unless you're a
giant unless you're like shout even it starts when you're watching like wwf you know what i mean like
you want to be able to throw somebody against the top turnbuckle like just hit him with a steel
chair everything was steel and wrestling too anything you picked up and hit somebody with
those made of steel oh yeah man that's true that's so entertaining quote unquote steel
yeah i was like i've never seen steel bend so easily yeah they hit you with that steel trash
can it was like it just crumbles like a soda can they say bethlehem steel but it's like
they always pulled it from underneath the ring like that was just the janitor's closet
They just had chairs, trash cans.
Hey, man, how am I going to clean up this place after this?
You just took all my trash cans.
What am I supposed to throw in the garbage?
Oh, that's great.
But, oh, and AI's taking over the world.
Oh, yeah.
Is it a good thing or a bad thing?
I mean, I guess there's-
It's a you can't stop thing.
Yeah, it's a you can't stop thing.
You cannot stop it.
It's like Puff Daddy.
Can't stop.
Won't stop.
It's out the box.
no ai is out the box yeah um all we have to do is live with it like anything that comes our way
i mean we can express our dislike towards something but if it's gonna happen it's gonna
happen you just gotta it's like how can you work with what we got was the internet a bad thing
it was the start of a bad thing it was the start of this whole thing we're living now that led to
i mean i don't know it all depends on what you consider a bad thing there's a lot of
opportunities that were made from the internet as well as uh a lot of bad things that came from
internet especially like social media look how a lot of us are like socially disconnected now
yeah when it comes to being social we're social we're so social we're anti-social so
it doesn't make any sense would we have been better without the internet i don't know what
do you guys think over there yeah you that guy right there what do you think it's funny but no
i don't know we're gonna keep it short and sweet um i definitely wanted to just introduce the set
have you on show gratitude for a couple of different things i'm glad you had me on i
appreciate it yeah we gotta get you back on when the show when the uh the album's about to drop
yes yes hopefully uh in about two months hopefully fingers crossed so there's some wwf going on
upstairs you hear my you hear my dog i'll probably be able to get most of that out the cataract
bottom that's funny but oh man so yeah a couple of months out we'll see if we can keep an ear out
for that and other than that do you have anything else you need to shout out love you mom
isn't that what we always say when we're on tv love you mom all right all right well big shout
