From Playgrounds to Podcasts: Jonathan's 'Mid Life Crisis' Odyssey - I Will Not Lose Podcast - #0039 Transcript [00:00:04.560] What's up, what's up, what's up? Good morning, good evening, good night, good afternoon, whatever time you're listening in, wherever you're listening from. [00:00:12.010] Could have been anywhere in the world, but you're here. Take a moment, be present, recognize that it's now, right now. [00:00:19.510] Whether you're right now is running, driving, flying, laying down, recording a podcast. Be thankful we're alive, baby. [00:00:26.990] Remember, failure can be frightening. [00:00:29.350] However, as Winston Churchill reminds us, success is all about going from failure to [00:00:33.210] failure without losing enthusiasm. [00:00:35.750] This is I Will Not Lose podcast, where we set out to prove everything is learned from [00:00:39.350] failure. [00:00:39.990] We must persevere and recognize it as one step closer to success. [00:00:44.670] I'm your host, Tony Ortiz. [00:00:46.730] Let's jump right in. [00:00:48.460] Got my buddy Johnny in the building today. [00:00:50.700] Cool thing you got here. [00:00:52.300] he's playing with the with the gimbal putting together some content that we use to promote [00:00:57.860] the episode but we are here live in the brand new set uh we're here man we built it this all [00:01:05.980] came from the vision remember about a year ago we were sitting there are you leaving that on [00:01:11.120] oh man i'm gonna have a 30 minute video i don't think i got enough space [00:01:16.900] now that'll be cool post that as a reel or something but i'd like to introduce johnny [00:01:22.500] melendez what's up i've known this guy since a long time yeah four or five years old yeah [00:01:31.020] sounds about right kindergarten days yeah i got you on the mic there now yeah oh man we go way [00:01:37.560] back so you're partially uh a bit of a sponsor when i first said i had this crazy idea hey we're [00:01:43.840] gonna start a podcast we um you had the sm58s yeah i had one of these and then uh the 58 i was [00:01:52.960] like yo i got you i'm coming through give me like an hour and i came through yeah about an hour and [00:01:58.040] a half later we had the uh the coat hanger i'm gonna probably grab it during this because we're [00:02:03.420] on video too i'm gonna grab it but you remember the screen that held the it made it was made to [00:02:08.820] hold monitors yeah and we like duct tape and garbage tie it was uh it was definitely quite [00:02:15.620] the put together rig but uh it's come through nice you got this cool banner it's like it's [00:02:21.600] really coming through this whole thing do you remember the the logo in the beginning i i [00:02:26.300] remember i put together a logo and i had it all designed with like the podcast mic and fire and [00:02:32.780] wings and did you see it did i show it to you before it was lost to all time i see i saw a [00:02:38.880] couple different designs because you were going through a couple designs with me so i did see [00:02:42.400] that one and i saw a couple similar to ones different color schemes and all that so on uh [00:02:49.320] episode zero i go into how i had created the logo for it and then ultimately restarted my computer [00:02:56.500] for audio drivers and never saved the logo so that's lost to time you know sometimes that's [00:03:02.260] the best thing when you lose something because you create something that's even better just like [00:03:06.520] forcefully like not not even this wasn't even the plan but this is how i ended up [00:03:11.580] and ends up well sometimes look what we got we got the crown with the i will not lose and the stars [00:03:17.040] a lot of meaning behind that one so i like it i like it i'm cool with it fast forward we got [00:03:25.080] actual mic arms we got actual mics got uh got the setup got some lighting yeah man that's well [00:03:32.720] lit now yep slowly make the upgrades um thank you to everybody who donated through the donation link [00:03:41.010] helped uh put everything together but this is unveiling the studio i'm glad i had you you [00:03:46.670] helped me put everything together hang the curtains and stuff like that so really the [00:03:52.490] first sponsor i think i shouted you out as the first sponsor with the i heard it with uh with [00:03:57.630] the mic appreciate it yep so we'll see where we could take this thing man we're growing it's crazy [00:04:04.920] you just turn on the mic post it to the internet and people listen internationally shout out to my [00:04:10.120] listeners in belgium yeah that's crazy having international listeners i mean you never know [00:04:15.600] the sky's the limit well yeah i'm in the ceiling right now but beyond that we got the sky it's out [00:04:21.420] there somewhere yeah yeah man yeah man shoot for the moon shoot for the stars um so what do you got [00:04:29.180] going on is there anything you could talk about just yet or save that for a future episode well [00:04:35.180] i was working on uh i am still currently as you know working on an album so uh it's going to be [00:04:42.480] called midlife crisis and i thought the name was suitable because it's i was just like really [00:04:49.260] thinking about i'm like feel like i'm at a turning point in life i'm 35 i'm just like doing the same [00:04:55.120] old loop work which ain't bad i mean you work you come home and that's that's usually everybody's [00:05:00.660] right but i kind of felt like incomplete because back in back when i was in my 20s i played in some [00:05:08.030] bands uh rock bands punk rock band and uh i always loved music music was something of a passion of [00:05:14.590] mine still is and i felt like i could not just die without putting some kind of music out i felt like [00:05:25.750] all that music i did would have just died in vain everything so i felt like i had to do something [00:05:32.330] like and i told myself i'd be okay if that album when it comes out if it lives and dies on my phone [00:05:39.890] or even in this great city of Allentown, if it lives and dies here, [00:05:44.750] I'm perfectly fine with that because it's more about expressing a lot of things [00:05:50.150] that happened throughout my life until this point. [00:05:53.670] I feel that, man. [00:05:55.410] I feel that. [00:05:56.150] But that's all I can talk about that. [00:05:58.630] It's still coming together. [00:06:00.530] Future date, though. [00:06:01.690] I'll be sure you're the first one to know. [00:06:04.670] All right, cool, man. [00:06:05.610] There's always a seat ready here for you. [00:06:07.850] Appreciate it. [00:06:08.690] it had me thinking I wanted to go over, I was sitting there going through, like, [00:06:14.190] did I really take time to list out my accomplishments and be grateful for them? [00:06:20.250] You know what I mean? Or do I just keep going? And it's like, you fast forward a year and you're [00:06:25.970] looking around, it's like, oh man, I haven't actually recorded. So we had some pre-recorded [00:06:31.870] content go up for the past month or so, which gave us time to build the set, focus on where [00:06:38.470] the show is going to go from there. And I never took the time to actually sit down and be like, [00:06:44.970] man, look, things are working out with life. Got the podcast going, the design business, [00:06:50.910] we're completely booked out for the next month. So that's going good. Things going good with the [00:06:56.670] family. We have my son in the studio. He's picking up. You were mixing his song. What do you think [00:07:03.690] of that i thought it was something that is uh definitely contemporary definitely like modern [00:07:09.110] and definitely could be something yeah if take the time to write some lyrics uh for your son [00:07:16.570] write some lyrics and uh just get them on track because uh that's definitely a sound that people [00:07:23.010] go for in these days yeah it's definitely workable and i just i think about it a lot [00:07:28.860] there's so much talent so much skill here in allentown and it just i don't want to say it [00:07:36.120] goes to waste because it doesn't go to waste but it's just we don't have a big local music scene [00:07:42.640] here i mean there is some small spots that do something but it's not as big as it should be [00:07:47.960] like if you go down to philly they got a they got a pretty big scene you go out you see a bunch of [00:07:52.100] local bands and it's a good show it's a packed show it's hard to pack out a show with the local [00:07:56.240] name around here everybody's just chasing big names that come into town passing by and whatnot [00:08:01.820] but i think this city definitely has a lot of potential and it needs to be shown on like a [00:08:11.260] light needs to shine on all of us here that are trying to do something so many people with big [00:08:16.760] dreams here definitely man uh they're welcome to come on i will not lose podcasts yes this is [00:08:23.660] going to be your breakthrough get up on here if you're a local artist and you just want to get [00:08:28.100] your music out come on i will not lose podcast and i guarantee you will not lose after that [00:08:33.360] there you go man that's that's the clip i'm gonna clip that i actually got a phase one working on [00:08:40.480] the intro for season four so i'm gonna switch up the audio switch up the audio we we got the [00:08:46.280] visual experience where we want it to be now it's a matter of just shifting to creating that audio [00:08:52.660] experience and pulling everything all together but even like when he came on here he played some [00:08:58.280] music and then people were texting me like oh man and they're texting me the the uh album artwork [00:09:05.440] yeah and i'm like oh man so it works trust me people people discover stuff in all sorts of [00:09:12.300] new ways yeah um who's the guy you had i think it was your first guest what was his name the rapper [00:09:18.480] gil thompson there you go yeah gil thompson after seeing that episode i went and got the album and [00:09:24.200] i was just thinking about it on the way over here that that that one he had just one track [00:09:27.940] accountability and it really hit me like today and what i was thinking about everything in life [00:09:32.800] i was like i was thinking about that song and i put it on and i was like oh yeah so i was just [00:09:36.920] like really feeling that and i wouldn't have i probably wouldn't have known the gil thompson's [00:09:41.000] it wasn't for this show well so you heard it here i will not lose podcast yeah he broke uh he broke [00:09:47.840] his album writing the heel on this show and a couple of people reached out shout out to gil [00:09:52.480] thompson been doing uh he's been doing music for a while i've probably done between singles and [00:10:00.160] album covers like 14 15 different pieces of artwork for him okay yeah definitely uh probably [00:10:09.440] like five or six of them being albums but go check out writing the heel on gilthompson.com [00:10:15.340] um but i've had a i've had some diverse guests and depending on i think this one's gonna drop [00:10:23.520] before we have heidi marco on we just had v alvarado excuse me a second i'm gonna have rocker [00:10:33.280] on john rocker okay but so besides music what else uh you got going on i've been training jujitsu [00:10:42.920] that's been fun yeah like uh tell me more about your jujitsu ah i don't know big shout out to [00:10:49.040] evan robinson over at exalt jujitsu but get over there a couple of days a week big shout out to [00:10:55.920] deb kirby um that's a serious commitment like a couple days a week to be just like fighting [00:11:02.410] i mean like if you're not a trained fighter ufc if you're like a ufc fighter you're doing that [00:11:06.510] that's what you do for a living but to do all your work and then to go train after that that's uh [00:11:11.250] there's a lot of effort yeah no for real for real it's fun though we do uh you do like flow [00:11:18.370] rolling or rolling with your eyes closed or competing for a few minutes at the end but [00:11:23.110] we'll go through work a skill this week we're working on arm bars so that sounds like fun [00:11:28.430] learning how to break arms yeah that's definitely a life-saving skill i'd like to see more um [00:11:36.150] women girls be into that as far as like self-defense how many how many women are in [00:11:42.230] your your gym your judo what are they called uh dojo i guess i just called yeah because i knew [00:11:50.050] that was like karate you went to the dojo but it's the same thing for bjj uh yeah some school i mean [00:11:56.890] your school but um maybe you got i don't know i call uh i call him coach i say i'm going to [00:12:05.790] practice i don't know but it's weird i look at it a lot like uh like you remember dragon ball z how [00:12:10.950] Goku would like train he'd get better but he looked at it like mostly as a joke like he was [00:12:16.230] just like fighting for fun no well you never saw Dragon Ball Z I know what Dragon Ball Z I never [00:12:22.610] got into Dragon Ball Z and I know like a lot of the friends I have a lot of the people we both know [00:12:27.010] they both love they all love Dragon Ball Z but I'm just like yeah I was never into anime or [00:12:34.350] anything big shout out to my partner Joe Graziano he trains jujitsu he never watched uh Dragon Ball [00:12:40.930] z either and i'm like dude it's like it's you don't get my references why would you trade [00:12:47.190] martial arts if you're not into anime that's the whole point of watching anime is like oh you know [00:12:52.270] but aren't you learning some japanese or would you chinese chinese yeah mandarin chinese that's [00:12:58.190] i've been learning for about like six months so far so it's uh it's tough it's tough i was like [00:13:04.870] i was thinking about i was like why why don't you want to learn chinese in the first place but [00:13:08.370] i'm sure when i reach that destination when i'm like two years into it and i could speak a well [00:13:15.290] amount of chinese i'm like oh i'm glad i learned this but for now it's just like uh why am i doing [00:13:21.030] this yeah isn't that any any journey and so you always question why you're doing something [00:13:26.490] because uh and that's good for long-term success when it comes to long-term success we can't be [00:13:34.280] looking for immediate rewards because we all want the quick reward to feel good in the moment but [00:13:39.700] enduring that whole length of struggle to gain a goal no matter what that goal is whether it's [00:13:47.550] learning a language uh learning a new skill instrument whatever whatever that might be [00:13:51.830] starting a business martial arts yeah it doesn't it's a long journey to you get to [00:13:58.020] a good how long did it take you to learn graphic designs to be as great as you are now at it [00:14:03.800] Ooh, I've easily put over 15,000 hours in. [00:14:08.040] Was it worth it? [00:14:09.340] I mean, it works well. [00:14:11.460] Was it worth it? [00:14:12.240] You don't think about it along the way. [00:14:14.640] It's worth it, but it would have been worth it if I did 1,000 hours and stopped. [00:14:18.560] Do you know what I mean? [00:14:19.160] Even these little side projects that you pick up or do, like making music, doing things [00:14:24.700] on the side that it's like, okay, I'm not going to put eight hours a day for the next [00:14:28.740] 10 years into this, but it's still something I'm learning. [00:14:31.460] like if i if i look back if i've reached black belt it's like was it worth it sure but if i [00:14:38.340] get to blue belt and say okay i know more than you know 90 of the world in terms of what to do [00:14:45.160] on the ground or what to do in a altercation then yeah maybe that's enough you know what i mean like [00:14:51.740] you don't have to go super saiyan no no just not to diffuse the situation they shouldn't go to [00:14:57.340] extreme levels of violence with any physical confrontation and it's hard i mean uh i mean [00:15:05.040] because there's a lot of nonsense violence that go that gets just carried away and i think if more [00:15:10.180] people were trained in brazilian jiu-jitsu they'd be more likely to want to diffuse the situation [00:15:15.880] instead of taking it to an extreme level of violence i don't know what do you think i mean [00:15:20.320] there's definitely a level of control and the last thing you want to do like when anybody who [00:15:25.460] trains will tell you like the first line of defense is like your legs like if you can still [00:15:29.420] get out of there like the only time you should be engaging is literally if you're trying to walk [00:15:34.160] away and somebody's like walking up on you then like cover your face and go in for the hips but [00:15:38.680] it's like that's fair you there would be a lot less people wanting like if more people trained [00:15:45.500] less confrontation would happen yeah because you know what could happen he's like i know what this [00:15:50.720] guy's capable of too but at the same time the the training doesn't like if you're against three [00:15:55.880] people you know you don't really want to get on the ground and engage with one because then you [00:16:00.660] have feet coming from other you know what i mean so yeah you just want to get out of there there's [00:16:05.280] weapons and stuff involved and things escalate like it's you know it's it's cool for self-defense [00:16:13.360] and for confidence like one thing that people tell you that train it's like you go around like [00:16:18.040] looking not sizing people up but you're like you're running through moves like i think i think [00:16:23.980] no matter how big or small you are i think that's something we all do as men and i've heard it on [00:16:30.000] another i think it was joe rogan's podcast or something like that some dudes on there he's [00:16:34.120] like yeah i do all those things i make sure i'm fit because you know what at the end of the day [00:16:38.600] i just want to make sure i can kick somebody's ass if i need to and that's what he said so like [00:16:42.760] ultimately that's that's it like we we all have that as men anybody that tells you otherwise it's [00:16:48.500] no you know you're lying to yourself because i think that's it yeah i think unless you're a [00:16:54.700] giant unless you're like shout even it starts when you're watching like wwf you know what i mean like [00:17:01.620] you want to be able to throw somebody against the top turnbuckle like just hit him with a steel [00:17:06.000] chair everything was steel and wrestling too anything you picked up and hit somebody with [00:17:10.800] those made of steel oh yeah man that's true that's so entertaining quote unquote steel [00:17:17.820] yeah i was like i've never seen steel bend so easily yeah they hit you with that steel trash [00:17:24.140] can it was like it just crumbles like a soda can they say bethlehem steel but it's like [00:17:32.980] they always pulled it from underneath the ring like that was just the janitor's closet [00:17:37.940] They just had chairs, trash cans. [00:17:40.780] Hey, man, how am I going to clean up this place after this? [00:17:43.600] You just took all my trash cans. [00:17:46.440] What am I supposed to throw in the garbage? [00:17:48.720] Oh, that's great. [00:17:50.920] But, oh, and AI's taking over the world. [00:17:54.080] Oh, yeah. [00:17:54.800] Is it a good thing or a bad thing? [00:17:56.520] I mean, I guess there's- [00:17:57.840] It's a you can't stop thing. [00:17:59.840] Yeah, it's a you can't stop thing. [00:18:01.520] You cannot stop it. [00:18:02.640] It's like Puff Daddy. [00:18:03.540] Can't stop. [00:18:04.280] Won't stop. [00:18:06.280] It's out the box. [00:18:07.280] no ai is out the box yeah um all we have to do is live with it like anything that comes our way [00:18:14.510] i mean we can express our dislike towards something but if it's gonna happen it's gonna [00:18:20.040] happen you just gotta it's like how can you work with what we got was the internet a bad thing [00:18:24.800] it was the start of a bad thing it was the start of this whole thing we're living now that led to [00:18:33.320] i mean i don't know it all depends on what you consider a bad thing there's a lot of [00:18:37.080] opportunities that were made from the internet as well as uh a lot of bad things that came from [00:18:43.280] internet especially like social media look how a lot of us are like socially disconnected now [00:18:48.260] yeah when it comes to being social we're social we're so social we're anti-social so [00:18:54.740] it doesn't make any sense would we have been better without the internet i don't know what [00:19:01.110] do you guys think over there yeah you that guy right there what do you think it's funny but no [00:19:08.440] i don't know we're gonna keep it short and sweet um i definitely wanted to just introduce the set [00:19:15.800] have you on show gratitude for a couple of different things i'm glad you had me on i [00:19:20.540] appreciate it yeah we gotta get you back on when the show when the uh the album's about to drop [00:19:26.200] yes yes hopefully uh in about two months hopefully fingers crossed so there's some wwf going on [00:19:36.540] upstairs you hear my you hear my dog i'll probably be able to get most of that out the cataract [00:19:42.500] bottom that's funny but oh man so yeah a couple of months out we'll see if we can keep an ear out [00:19:49.420] for that and other than that do you have anything else you need to shout out love you mom [00:19:56.570] isn't that what we always say when we're on tv love you mom all right all right well big shout [00:20:05.010] out to all my listeners thank you for tuning in this is another episode of i will not lose podcast [00:20:09.510] to support the show visit i will not lose podcast.com and if you're listening in and can't [00:20:15.350] see the link you can go to to the designer.com slash links i have the latest episode as well as [00:20:22.070] some donation links up there so be sure to check it out ario peace see you later nos vemos
