The Goal Is To Fail 3 - I Will Not Lose Podcast - #0030 Transcript [00:00:05.490] Yo, yo, yo. Good morning. Good evening. Good night. Good afternoon. Whatever time you're [00:00:09.950] listening in, wherever you're listening from, shout out to my Spotify listenership, [00:00:13.830] Apple and Google Podcasts, Stitcher, YouTube if you're watching in. Thanks for giving me a reason [00:00:18.990] to get dressed. Coming live from my voice to your phone, headphones, TV, or car stereo. [00:00:24.010] Your attention could have been anywhere in the world, but it's here right now. Take a moment [00:00:28.190] and be present and recognize that it's now, right now. Whether your right now is working, [00:00:32.750] running, exercising, cleaning, laying down, flying, driving. Be grateful we're alive, baby. [00:00:39.010] Failure can be frightening. However, as Winston Churchill reminds us, [00:00:42.530] success is all about going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm. [00:00:47.230] This is I Will Not Lose Podcast, where we set out to prove that everything is learned from failure, [00:00:51.650] and we must persevere and recognize it as one step closer to success. [00:00:55.590] I'm your host, Tony Ortiz. Let's jump right in, all the way in. [00:00:59.970] I feel good today, guys. I feel good. Can you believe we've been winging it for seven months [00:01:06.590] straight? We're navigating this chaos, trying to find some structure. And one thing that has [00:01:13.820] held true as a theme of this podcast, the very first episode zero we put out was the goal is [00:01:20.500] to fail. And knowing that I gave myself room to fail was probably what gave me that final straw [00:01:29.110] to break the camel's back and go ahead and jump into doing a podcast. And was I ready seven months [00:01:35.870] ago? No. Am I ready now? Absolutely not. But you know what? Here we are. We only dropped late maybe [00:01:42.690] one or two days in seven months. So I'm going to pat myself on the back. Let's just give a round [00:01:49.010] of applause for the perseverance, for continuing to go. So this isn't me on my high horse. This is [00:01:56.130] me taking a look, taking time to recognize the successes and look back at them. [00:02:01.350] Because otherwise, you know, you're just going and what are you doing it for? [00:02:05.250] So 15 episodes in before the launch of season two, we dropped the goal is to fail part two. [00:02:12.290] If you're a new listener, if this is your first episode, you dropped in on the right [00:02:15.850] time. [00:02:16.490] And so we're going to give an idea, just checking to make sure the podcast is still on track. [00:02:21.330] Some personal goals that I have going on. [00:02:23.530] So this is the goal is to fail part three. [00:02:26.890] So I didn't even realize we crossed the six month mark. [00:02:30.750] I looked my first episode was October 18th, 2022. [00:02:35.830] So last month, about about 30 days ago or so, we hit the six month mark. [00:02:42.090] Didn't have any sort of party, didn't stop and do anything. [00:02:45.190] And that's a little bit outside of what I wanted to get into it for. [00:02:50.770] I mean, one of the beauties of setting up a YouTube channel or Spotify listenership via podcast is you get to see the numbers grow and you get to see something that lives there that everybody can access that's just out there on the airwaves. [00:03:05.030] And one thing I didn't want to do was make this a podcast about the flavor of the week and whatever was happening. [00:03:10.390] So while every other podcast right now is talking about Ja Morant and Kanye getting back with Adidas, you know, we're going to continue to put out what I call evergreen content. [00:03:20.770] So you can go back and listen to maybe episode 10 on we started doing themed podcasts that were more about a specific topic rather than trying to be breaking news. [00:03:34.270] You know, I podcast for fun. [00:03:36.050] I don't want to turn this into something where I have to become a journalist or, you know, big shout out to the journalists and people whose platform you are news to your audience. [00:03:46.210] But that's not what I'm trying to build here. [00:03:48.170] So I try to keep things lighthearted, not too serious, but I do understand that it's a platform and my voice is going out there. [00:03:57.970] So I'm careful about what I say, but I don't not curse on purpose. [00:04:05.450] So something interesting as I listen back to the goal is to fail to every time you upload an episode, it asks you, is there explicit language here? [00:04:13.290] And I'm pretty sure on every guest episode we did curse. But at least when I'm talking to myself, for some reason, I just have like this professionalism. So it has been brought up. It was funny. We were talking about it on the episode with phase one and season two, where he says, do you read your intro? You know, that's a little bit professional. [00:04:34.810] Well, I just want to address this. This is who I am. I am actually dressed in a t-shirt, but I'm normally wearing a collar shirt and slacks. It's just what I feel comfortable in. It's what I've always done. And so that's me being real. That's not me trying to impress anybody. That's what I'm comfortable in. [00:04:54.150] So my respect for the mic is, I think, what keeps me not cursing because I have the mouth [00:04:59.410] of a sailor. [00:05:00.350] But I don't know. [00:05:01.690] You don't know who's listening. [00:05:03.010] You don't know if somebody's listening with their kids, you know, so I'm not going to [00:05:07.370] try not to curse. [00:05:08.670] Stuff will slip out. [00:05:10.290] But as far as it goes, as I can look, we haven't really been cursing. [00:05:14.970] So that's not on purpose or one way or the other. [00:05:18.430] But self-expectations can sometimes hold us back. [00:05:22.480] So I try not to set standards too high. [00:05:26.760] You know, I have clients in my real life that hold me to a certain level of a visual standard. [00:05:32.820] But this is the podcast. [00:05:35.120] This is fun. [00:05:35.960] This is something people can throw into their weekly content when they're driving, flying, [00:05:41.020] running, just throw on, connect. [00:05:44.460] And it's important for me to include my own personal anecdotes. [00:05:48.900] You know, this is not meant to be a preachy thing. [00:05:51.080] This is very much Tony Ortiz. I have listeners that just know me through the Internet, and I have listeners that have known me and even known earlier versions of myself before I, you know, I don't want to say ascended, but I'm constantly searching for improvement, whether that be in self-improvement, career improvement, or just making an overall better podcast. [00:06:13.320] so I don't put myself to too high of a standard and I have to remind myself every goal is to fail [00:06:21.200] that the goal is to fail fail forward have fun while you're failing I mean it's it's funny I [00:06:28.580] try not to be so self-deprecating on myself but I really I really don't think that um [00:06:37.570] I don't know I never mind I won't be self-deprecating I am the best that has ever done [00:06:43.860] this. But now we're living in an era where everybody seems to have a podcast and that's [00:06:52.540] great. There's not a niche that's untouched, whether you're doing true crime, whether you're [00:06:57.460] doing movie recaps, whether you're just talking about the flavor of the week or your culture [00:07:01.900] podcast. There's no buddy that's not on the mic speaking about the same thing as you. So why are [00:07:08.380] somebody going to connect with you? It's probably not as much about the information as it is the [00:07:13.920] just the cadence, the voice. If somebody likes your voice, they will come back and they will [00:07:22.500] check in. And so I try to make a great show. Audio is definitely paramount. The video YouTube stuff, [00:07:30.200] thank you guys for watching in, but I don't get it. I listen to my podcasts. I very rarely watch [00:07:36.840] in. But as I check the numbers, it's probably more popular than the audio version. But hey, [00:07:43.920] Um, speaking of listener engagement, I was really touched. [00:07:48.480] I can't believe how many people after the last episode, you know, it's, it's, I don't [00:07:54.640] like to get stuck in numbers because I looked at the amount of people that viewed the last [00:07:59.540] episode and it was a little bit lower than normal, but the amount of people that reached [00:08:04.180] out to me, uh, at least a half a dozen people reached out and said, Hey, I listened to your [00:08:09.180] last episode. [00:08:09.920] You know, you're definitely getting better. [00:08:11.560] Keep doing this. [00:08:12.520] And although the theme of my last episode was saying just to keep going and keep creating, whether or not anybody's listening, it was amazing how many people made themselves known that, hey, I'm listening. [00:08:26.260] I just wanted to check in, you know, give you feedback, good or bad. [00:08:30.800] The bad feedback, I truly appreciate, you know. [00:08:34.340] Big shout out to my wife. [00:08:36.240] It only took seven months. [00:08:38.080] You're a listener, babe. [00:08:39.140] I saw you subscribe. [00:08:40.700] That's great. [00:08:42.140] So she had given me some feedback on some things, and I'm putting that into practice [00:08:46.640] right away. [00:08:47.420] I don't think I'm the best at this. [00:08:49.200] I think there's always room to improve. [00:08:50.960] And like I said, the goal is to fail. [00:08:53.720] So we're going to keep doing this recurring theme at the beginning of every new season [00:08:58.040] that we kick off. [00:08:59.120] We are going to just take a break, look back at what we've achieved, congratulate ourselves [00:09:05.160] if we're still doing it, and just kind of be accountable. [00:09:08.820] so it's a matter of cultivating a growth mindset you know to navigate failures you have to develop [00:09:17.540] a growth mindset you have to realize that you are getting better I actually I'm a little upset with [00:09:24.220] myself for not having a little six-month party because I think it's nine episodes most podcasts [00:09:30.600] go about nine episodes and then fall off so this will be episode 30 we definitely got further than [00:09:38.160] that, but this is my personal journey. Thank you for coming along with me. I really appreciate you [00:09:45.100] guys engaging, listening, and a big shout out to you. You know who you are, who had said that you [00:09:50.260] could really see the dedication in it. So it's not, hey, you're the best podcaster. I can't believe [00:09:56.040] you haven't blown up yet. It's, you know, you do this every week and you continue to put out more [00:10:01.440] and more and get better and better. So that's the growth, man. It's a matter of striking a balance. [00:10:08.680] You don't want to grow too fast that it's not organic. We don't want to be too big or be something that's not. So we listen to listener feedback and change things based on that. But one of the challenges that I wasn't sure we could keep was to stay on theme with the podcast. [00:10:26.180] So stories of success learned from failure, the idea of persevering, having a growth mindset. [00:10:32.700] And I realized, let me take 10 things, 10 topics or themes that the podcast can be about and see if I've hit them so far. [00:10:41.440] So we're going to go through them. [00:10:43.100] The upside of failure. [00:10:44.880] We talk about that almost every episode. [00:10:49.210] Failure can be a it's a huge stepping stone towards success. [00:10:53.390] So going out and not wanting to fail. [00:10:56.730] I mean, if I thought that I was just going to wait till I had the perfect podcast and [00:11:00.410] then put it out, I'd still be at the drawing board. [00:11:03.490] You know, when we talk about famous failures or people like Kanye West or Elon Musk in [00:11:09.710] the earlier season one, we definitely covered some of those. [00:11:14.670] It's it's interesting. [00:11:16.050] You know, it's a way to spin what's happening in the news, because definitely you'll get [00:11:20.970] viewers. If you're talking about Andrew Tate or whatever is popping on the internet, you're [00:11:26.390] definitely going to be shown more in the algorithm. And so it's a way of, do I want to grow? Is my [00:11:32.950] goal to have a hundred million subscribers that I gained? Not conning, but I'm fine if of my 30 [00:11:42.370] episodes, there's one episode that speaks to you and you watched it, never subscribed, but it made [00:11:47.710] some sort of change. I'm completely cool with that. Personal anecdotes. That was one of the [00:11:54.960] biggest thing I wanted to involve in this show is everybody has a podcast, but there is one Tony [00:12:01.140] Ortiz. If I share my things, it helps people relate on a personal level. People who know me [00:12:07.280] know I have no fear to go and be self-deprecating or put out failures that I've done. So I try to [00:12:13.760] include personal anecdotes, not just for listener engagement, but also because honestly, sometimes [00:12:22.010] I check back. There's times I don't feel like creating. I create professionally and I have a [00:12:27.190] podcast on the side in addition to helping multiple other people produce podcasts. I am a producer [00:12:33.590] outside of this show. So you don't think there's times that I'm just like, I don't want to do my [00:12:39.150] hair today. I don't want to get ready. I have these cameras on me and I thank you in the beginning of [00:12:45.810] every episode for giving me a reason to get dressed. That's not just some corny pun that I [00:12:49.910] put in there. I mean, it is some corny pun that I put in there, but the reason why I say thank you [00:12:54.370] for giving me a reason to get dressed is there's people that literally are suffering from depression [00:12:59.510] to the point where they can't get up out of bed and you need to count little wins like brushing [00:13:04.790] your teeth or doing your hair. So I put myself out on a pedestal that I know once a week on a Sunday [00:13:10.830] when it'd be the easiest to just stay in my pajamas. I'm going to get up, I'm going to record, [00:13:15.590] and I'm going to put myself out there publicly. So it's something that helps with my mental health. [00:13:21.370] And it's big, you know? The other thing that we wanted to do if we did have guests was stories [00:13:29.850] of resilience and perseverance so if you take a listen back to like our episode with ryan sharing [00:13:36.030] his story about recovery uh that's an absolute story of perseverance you know you take any of [00:13:42.590] the guest episodes people you know we had uh brian yant uh armed forces champion wrestler [00:13:49.030] he definitely told his story of resilience as well as being an entrepreneur uh phase one [00:13:56.050] creating content for years. I think he's been creating content for 10, 15 years, music, [00:14:05.640] production, rap, and the level of resilience that that kid has on putting together. No disrespect, [00:14:12.660] I don't mean to call you a kid, you're my age, but it's just amazing, the resilience. So that's [00:14:18.520] why we wanted to have people like that on the show. And we do have a few guests lined up for [00:14:23.820] season three. So I'm really excited to drop those episodes. You know, we've created a platform that [00:14:30.060] people are willing to come on and share their story and we have a ton of fun doing it. Does [00:14:35.780] this podcast help people overcome the fear of failure? I mean, I hope it does. I know there's [00:14:40.820] some people who reach out to me and say, hey, I'm thinking of starting a podcast. And just me being [00:14:45.980] out there, putting myself out and doing this gives them a reason to say, hey, I may want to try that [00:14:51.840] out. You know, do you ever feel like a fraud when you're wanting to be discovered? You know, [00:14:59.230] it's the imposter syndrome. And we did a whole episode on my personal feelings of imposter [00:15:04.590] syndrome. And I feel it even seven months in podcasting. I'm sitting there thinking of the [00:15:09.430] podcast that been out for 10 years. And I don't think that I've accomplished much so far. But I [00:15:14.870] got to shoot that out of my head and really tell myself, you know what? You do anything for seven [00:15:19.030] months. Go to school, work a job, anything. You definitely gain some skills over the time. [00:15:26.850] So handling criticism and rejection, that's definitely a part of this show. I openly talk [00:15:33.590] about changes that I want to make, mistakes that we've made, and things that we want to do to [00:15:37.850] improve. So rather than just move on and pretend like, oh, yeah, we didn't mean to do that. Let's [00:15:44.590] not even acknowledge it, I'll go out there and say, you know, we did something completely wrong [00:15:49.830] and I wish we could go back, but I'm also glad we started seven months ago and not seven months [00:15:54.450] from now. So as we continue this journey, remember it's about bouncing back that defines us. It's [00:16:02.090] about being able to look back at our mistakes, set goals, and kind of go from there. Let's embrace [00:16:07.910] our failures. Let's turn them into stepping stones. I got a couple announcements. That was [00:16:13.450] the goal is to fail to check in on the podcast but i did have some personal things i said i'd [00:16:18.270] check in every couple of months and let you guys know uh so those of you who know i've been training [00:16:23.590] jiu-jitsu over at uh exalt jiu-jitsu at uh 36e fitness that's run by evan robinson he's a [00:16:32.230] purple belt under the renzo gracie school and he's just a complete i'm gonna have him on the [00:16:40.370] podcast. His story is absolutely phenomenal, but the things that he's been able to teach me through [00:16:45.270] the sport of jujitsu, specifically in self-defense, has absolutely gained my confidence, gives me a [00:16:52.410] reason to exercise. And it's probably the thing besides the podcast that I look the most forward [00:16:57.410] to throughout the week, really helps clear my mind. So I will continue to live the martial arts [00:17:04.110] life and continue to train and check in every now and then, let you know. If I do work towards a [00:17:11.910] belt promotion, I'll let you guys know what happened with that because that'll be exciting. [00:17:17.130] Other goals I had personally was to get better at Spanish. So I'm working a lot with learning how [00:17:24.210] the language is put together and I need more practice. Necesito practicar habla mas. I need [00:17:32.410] to speak more. I'm able to understand a lot better. There's just a certain verbs that get me [00:17:40.380] mixed up, but I'm absolutely growing from there. I've been texting people in Spanish and picking [00:17:46.560] out who I know because the next goal is going to be for me to speak it. You can learn how to say [00:17:54.420] proper and how the words and the structures go, but if you're not in practice speaking it, you [00:17:58.820] never get over that confidence of being able to speak fluently so that's going to be the goal [00:18:06.620] i did mention that we're working on some music and we'll have an announcement coming up soon [00:18:13.340] johnny told me not to tell anybody but nobody listens to this podcast anyway so it's all good [00:18:19.240] but we're going to be shooting a music video for a track that's going to be dropping really excited [00:18:25.600] for that man it's been stuck in my head since we've done it uh really excited just working on [00:18:30.900] putting some mastering and some finalization on that and within the next two weeks we're probably [00:18:35.940] going to set out and shoot a music video and put that together but uh the goal is to fail man [00:18:45.590] it was funny uh big shout out to nice jones he had posted on his facebook the other day [00:18:51.030] what is your dream job? And I said, graphic designer, videographer, podcast producer. [00:18:59.430] And it came off so easily. I'm like, oh, wow, I'm literally living my dream jobs. I'm able to [00:19:06.590] make a living creating and doing what I love. So he had followed up with a post and said, [00:19:12.610] what's stopping you from doing your dream job? And I won't lie, there's a lot of fear in it. [00:19:20.460] it took me a while to go out completely and be an entrepreneur. But if I were to think what [00:19:27.720] would have stopped me from doing it, it was the fear that there's no career in it. I mean, [00:19:33.640] the biggest thing that they talk about is the starving artists. So who would have thought that [00:19:37.880] I would have been able to create, you know, for 10, 12 years and continue to grow from graphics [00:19:45.840] into motion graphics and things like that but it's just been an amazing ride you know um i'm [00:19:54.630] grateful that's that's what i'm trying to say i'm like choked up like what am i trying to say [00:19:59.070] i am absolutely grateful and i don't have to record this podcast every week i get to i have [00:20:05.670] the privilege to be able to put it together if you go back and you look at the first episode we [00:20:10.970] literally had a monitor stand like the things that hold two monitors up on your desk we had [00:20:15.890] the mics garbage tied to those. And it was funny because everybody's like, wow, the studio is so [00:20:20.890] nice. I'm like, you're not looking close enough. But hey, we faked it till we made it and we're [00:20:27.270] still faking it till we make it. You know, the goal is simply to fail. This is I Will Not Lose [00:20:34.970] podcast where we set out to prove that everything is learned from failure. We must persevere and [00:20:39.610] recognize it as one step closer to success.
